One of the more fascinating things about this portrait is that in every reproduction, the woman looks pregnant.
See it in person, and … nope, she looks nothing like that.
I’m not sure what you’ve seen that looks otherwise, but she definitely looks pregnant in the original…
I am pretty excited that this is referenced as simply a portrait and not a “wedding portrait” like it is normally. They didn’t get married for awhile after this was painted and it was just a legal document giving her power of attorney while he was out of town.
When I saw it in the National Gallery in London in 2007, she did not look pregnant. I’m going based on my own experience. I remember it being very odd and noted it at the time.
